Overview
Winged Foot’s two-course complex is the product of A.W. Tillinghast’s fertile imagination. Every characteristic of the more famous West Course also exists on the Winged Foot East (which, incredibly, was used as a parking lot during recent U.S. Opens). A few years back, architect Gil Hanse re-established Tillinghast’s bunkering and reclaimed the original sizes and shapes of the greens, bringing “corner-pocket” hole locations back into play.

Review
“Wonderful set of par 3's, all of which could be considered the signature hole along with #14 a mid length par 4 over a creek w/ a funnel green complex. Firm and fast throughout w/ lush and penal rough, deep bunkering, and very challenging yet fair set of green complexes that are interesting start to finish. Much friendlier course than the West mainly due to the length of holes but also a bit easier w/ the difficulty of rough and bunkers"

“The original US Open host design lacks very little in comparison to big brother in shot options, conditioning and layout variety and I believe is a step above in distinctiveness and aesthetics. Holes 4 and 13 possibly represent the best par 5 and 3 (respectively) over the 36 holes at Winged Foot. While the false fronts are not quite as pronounced (or numerous) as on West, the challenge of these greens in speed, and shot options with the putter as well as from greenside, forces a player to summon creativity and execution on every stroke taken within 100 feet from the hole."

“Just a bit more playable for the mid-handicapper, which makes it arguably more fun to play than the West course."

“Almost as good as the West course. Not quite as difficult but has the same general feel. Terrific clubhouse and club history."
