Overview
Redesigned by Tom Weiskopf in 2018, Torrey Pines' North course became friendly for the average golfer. The number of bunkers were reduced from 60 to 42 and made easier to play out of. And the average green size was increased from 4,500 square feet to 6,000. Lastly, Weiskopf added one of his signatures: a short, drivable par 4 (the seventh)—making the companion course to the championship South course a little more fun.

“The friendlier more gentle 18 holes on the La Jolla cliffs sits the North course. While the views are some of the best in the country, the golf course itself is rather bland. The front 9 is very straightforward outside of the 4th, which does a fantastic job of utilizing the barranca, as you need to shape it around the hazard off the tee. With a lot of trees removed from the property and a lack of framing around the greens, every hole seems all too similar till you make your way to the back nine."

“Torrey Pines North suffers slightly from a more tournament-heralded course next-door, but the layout is an aesthetic delight while being a solid challenge as well. Perhaps you will not remember all the holes as they blend together a bit, you but you will surely remember the all-world views of La Jolla down the cliffs!"

“In 2016, Torrey Pines North was redesigned by the late Tom Wesikopf and added to what is unquestionably and incredible piece of property. While it may not get the praise or the attention of the South Course at Torrey, its safe to say that visitors won’t leave disappointed with this fun, and gorgeous property. The course provides views equal to exceeding the south, conditioning that is very good at the time of this writing, and a truly memorably and fun golf experience for players of all abilities."

“Top quality layout with ocean and mountain views throughout. Superior southern California course."

“Boring front nine, great back nine. Not a great value for out of towners. Bring your hard hat for the front nine."

“The new North Course remodeled by Weiskpof is greatly improved but takes too long to play (5 hours)."

“Some great ocean views. Very playable with a few very memorable holes near the ocean. Conditioning is good for a course that receives so much play. Practice facility is limited."

“Just a good solid public course. The course that the pros play is definitely not the same course they have the rest of the year. Great views on holes 13 through 16."

“Even after the re-design, the North course still feels like it does not come anywhere close to taking full advance of the seaside location. This has been the case with both the North and South courses before and after their respective redesigns. But, I love the ocean air and being in La Jolla which always makes it a great day."

“Would play again. Course completely redone, unfortunately I never played it before the redesign so I’m not able to comment comparatively. Probably 3 holes along the ocean had significant wow factor, but other than those, the course was pretty repetitive except for the greens. Really tough, hard, fast greens. Was told because of their young age, the greens were not receptive to approach shots. Very challenging to know where to hit your approach shots to the point it was like a chess game. In addition to being hard to the point of never having to repair a hallmark, the greens were undulating with multiple shelves to provide a nice assortment of pin placements. The fairways were very generous and with few trees on the course, and the rough cut pretty low, you could virtually drive anywhere and have a good chance of a clear approach shot. If not for the difficulty of the greens, the holes came across as pretty tame. If you tend to be wild off the tee you’ll love the North course! Take away the ocean view and the 3 wow factor holes, I would have been greatly disappointed as a first time Torrey Pines North player. However, the overall experience was fun. The pro shop was great and the staff was friendly."

“After the recent renovation, the course is now much more open and plays faster, but it sacrificed some of the character of the previous look. From the normal tees it isn't particularly challenging or memorable. It is still a great site with fantastic views and well worth playing."

“The newly redesigned course features new tee boxes, green complexes and bunkers by Tom Weiskopf created a playable, memorable course that is no longer an after thought to its more well known cousin to the south. Great views of the ocean and surrounding hills plus a walkable (although you need to be in shape to attack the hilly terrain) course will appeal to all levels."
