Pinehurst No. 4
Pinehurst, NC • Public
Pinehurst Resort
Overview
Like a football team searching for the right coach, the resort could never settle on the right identity for the No. 4 course despite a series of major alterations by different architects. It found its match when it hired Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner to carry out a full-scale blow-up and rebuild in 2018 that brought back the sweeping sand-and-pine character we identify with Pinehurst, while initiating a style of shaping in the greens and bunkers that’s confident and distinctly its own.

“Need to play it from the correct set of tees. Preferred the course before the changes, but still fun to play."

“This redesign is outstanding work on No 4. The shot values, Character and layout have really increased. This is a must play course if in the area."

“The second-best course on the property, the #4 course may in fact be the more "fun" of the two as it is slightly less punishing around the greens and also brings in some more water and elevation changes to the round. On a non-golf note -- make sure to check out the halfway house as its the only place on property where you can get a "Woodpecker" cocktail."

“It is at times difficult to imagine when playing Pinehurst No. 4 that this is the same course that it was before an extensive renovation by Gil Hanse. That renovation has produced a championship caliber golf course that beats up the typical golfer to the point of unfairness."

“#4 is probably the 2nd best course at the resort. I'd say this has many good holes but I didn't really find any "great" ones to give it a higher score. Good course, nice walk, but keep expectations reasonable."

“This course has gone through many renovations/redesigns. The latest from Gil Hanse has resorted to it the scrubby old feeling. It might be the second best course at the resort."

“If you love Pinehurst #2 you'll love #4. Many of same characteristics without as severe greens."

“The completely new redesign of No.4 by Gil Hanse is the second best course at Pinehurst Resort."

“One of the more challenging and interesting option at Pinehurst. A fun course with lots of trees and some fun water holes amid some great scenery."

“This is a wonderful course and is being renovated to make it even better. The course has hosted big events in the past including the US Amateur. The holes are demanding and the holes around the water are great. The walk back toward the clubhouse on 18 is inspiring in the late afternoon with the porch on full display and the long shadows from the pines. I cannot wait to play after the remodel. I think it will be one of the best in Pinehurst and North Carolina."

“The Pinehurst restaurant in the clubhouse, dubbed The Deuce, overlooks the 18th green of No. 2. The relaxed bar setting is a great place to hit after a round at No. 2, No. 4 or The Cradle. The 91st Hole, also in the clubhouse, is a good place for quick eats and drinks."
