Masters 2023: Tiger Woods withdraws following brutal Masters career-first
Christian Iooss
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the 87th Masters, citing a plantar fasciitis injury.
Woods, a five-time Masters champion, played 14 total holes on a cold and rainy Saturday at Augusta National. After the second round was suspended on Friday afternoon, Woods returned Saturday morning and restarted at the 12th hole, hitting his tee shot inside five feet but missing the putt. He shot 74-73, making the cut on the number and tying the Masters cut-streak record of 23 with Fred Couples and Gary Player.
But when the third round began at 11:30 a.m., Tiger starting off the 10th tee in the final threesome off the back, the rain rolled in, and Woods began seriously struggling. He played just seven holes in six over par, dropping all the way to last place at nine over. He made consecutive double bogeys at the 15th and 16th holes, finding the water each time, before the horn sounded. Per stats guru Justin Ray, that was an unfortunate career-first.
Late in the day, Woods did not appear to be in fine health. Multiple rogue videos found their way to Twitter of Woods' limping from his shot to his bag, the cold temperatures clearly getting to him. It's safe to assume everything hurt for the 15-time major winner.
CBS annonucer Amanda Balionis reported that she talked to TIger's agent, Mark Steinberg, who said Woods got up Sunday morning and began his routine in hopes of playing on Sunday but that the plantar fasciitis was bothering him too much to be able to play.
The third round of the Masters will resume at 8:30 a.m. ET. Thomas Pieters and Sungjae Im, Woods' two playing partners, will finish their round as a twosome.
