Erik van Rooyen had a closing stretch to remember on Sunday at the World Wide Technology Championship—all while keeping the memory of an ailing college teammate top of mind. With six birdies over the final nine holes—along with a 18-foot eagle on the 18th hole at Mexico’s El Cardonal Diamante—the 33-year-old South African chased down 54-hole co-leaders Matt Kuchar and Camilo Villegas.

Van Rooyen’s final-round 63 gave him a 27-under 261 total and a second PGA Tour title to go with the 2021 Barracuda Championship. And after coming into the week sitting 125th on the FedEx Cup points list, it also ended any concern about keeping his tour card for 2024.

But that didn’t seem to matter in the grand scheme of things. After the third round Saturday, van Rooyen discussed how he was anxious to be done with the tournament in order to go visit Jon Trasamar, a teammate of his at the University of Minnesota who is fighting cancer.

“I've got a mate that's really sick and I want to go see him,” van Rooyen said. “I just want to go home and go see him, so I want to get my job done tomorrow and just take care of business.”

Suffice it to say, the emotions were high then after he did just that, speaking after the round on Sunday of how he was able to stay composed on the course and pull out arguably the best round of his career.

“I was calm because there is bigger stuff in life than golf, “ van Rooyen said. “Every shot out there today was for him. When you’re playing for something bigger than some silly trophy, it puts it in perspective. At the end of the day if I won here or I lost here, it really did not matter. When something motivates you like that, whether you make a putt or miss a putt, who cares.”

While money certainty wasn’t something van Rooyen was thinking about, he did earn a nice payday. The winner earned $1.476 million for the first-place prize money payout.

The overall purse in Mexico was $8.2 million. Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer who made the cut.
