Overview
Despite the rumor, Erin Hills wasn’t designed specifically to host a U.S. Open. Its original concept was to be a simple, affordable, lay-of-the-land layout, to prove Mother Nature is indeed the best golf architect. The concept changed—some greens moved, one blind par 3 eliminated—as the quest for a U.S. Open grew. That dream came true: after trial runs hosting the 2008 U.S. Women’s Public Links and the 2011 U.S. Amateur, Erin Hills hosted the U.S. Open in 2017, the first time the event had ever been in Wisconsin. Brooks Koepka won with a 72-hole score of 16-under, leading some to conclude Erin Hills was too wide and defenseless. In truth, what it lacked that week was the usual gusty winds that would have effectively narrowed the slanted, canted fairways. Had the par been adjusted to 70 instead of 72 as is usual for most Opens, the score would likely have been closer to 8-under.

“Phenomenal course and layout. Caution: really challenging walk with hikes up to tee boxes and lots of rolling terrain."

“What a fantastic golf course (and hospitality experience)! The course is winding and can play to any length desirable given the tee options. Both times I played was walking with a caddy and I found it incredibly helpful with all the fescue. Fun for all levels but lower handicaps will appreciate more. Speaking of fescue—I think this is the perfect level of penalizing on any course I played. It was almost always findable and just made the shots harder to hit. I’ll add that once the course hits about hole 6-7 range and on, it’s a world class golf course. (The opening 3rd is very very good, but it changes to magnificent at that point) One non golf thing: at the turn I recommend the brat on the warm pretzel bun with mustard and the signature drink Fescue Rescue — really powers you through the back 9!"

“As strong of a public access golf course as there exists in the United States. It is a championship layout that is nevertheless enjoyable for the typical golfer. Open, windy, wonderful, with some of the best conditioning of any public golf course I have ever seen."

“Huge property. Options galore on how to attack many holes. I would imagine it would be a challenging course on a calm day. With the wind up, look out."

“I love the scale of this place. This entire golf course is about your second shot. I love the whole experience. Definitely stay at the lodge or one of the new cottages. Great locker room. Friendly Staff. Thanks to Quentin for some great wine after our round."

“Fantastic place to play, with a wide variety of tee combination options down to 6,233 yards. From the tips 7,800 yards will truly challenge anyone's game. There are no trees to speak of, but topography and sand provide several obstacles. The course is walk-only, so be prepared for many up and down climbs. Attached photo is the #4 approach to a green well protected by bunkers in front and to the sides."

“With the wind blowing be prepared to play good shots to have a good round. When you look at the course you might think it doesn't look to difficult, but it can be depending on the the direction the wind blows. I liked the entire facility."

“It's all about golf here. Fantastic rolling terrain and a few fun blind shots. The dunescape helps to frame the holes well considering there are not a lot of trees on the property. The course has a bit of a secluded feel and it really feels like your are in rural Wisconsin - which is a good thing. And, being rewarded for length produced a few personal highlights. The Irish stew in the cosy clubhouse was also a highlight."
