The Henebrys
Overview
One of Seth Raynor’s last designs, it wasn’t completed until nearly a year after his 1926 death. William Jackson, who later became the club’s pro and superintendent, handled the construction and was faithful to Raynor’s diagrams with two exceptions: he turned the 16th into a par 4 and the 17th into a par 5. Robert von Hagge added flashy but incongruous bunkering in the early 1960s. They lasted over 20 years, until Tom Doak undertook a restoration in the Raynor style of geometric-shaped bunkers and greens. Curiously, the Biarritz green at the par-3 eighth has never been mowed as the 60-yard-long putting surface found on other Biarritz holes built by Raynor or his mentor C.B. Macdonald. Club officials insisted early aerial photos confirm the front half of the green was always mown at fairway height, so they continue that tradition today. Don Placek of Renaissance Golf has recently completed further renovation enhancements, including adding six acres of restored fairway to better help define the scale of the property and extending the back left section of the Road green at 17 (as well as reintroducing a second "Road" bunker beyond the first) to reclaim its original prodigious 15,000 square feet.

“it is just another masterclass in architecture from Seth Raynor. The difference with this edition is the land that Camargo sits on – great topography and has the Miami valley – think large ravines—going thru the golf course. Tom Doak was recently hired and has removed some trees, but apparently a lot more tree removal is going to occur and they are going to bring back the back left portion of the 17th green – Road Hole. It is on a broad scale on a large piece of property. What makes this Raynor design so special is the land that it’s on. You are constantly playing up or downhill and hitting shots over ravines. The template holes on this property are just magnified. The shot options from the tee shots are incredible. You try to have the ball land on a certain section of the fairway or sometimes the first cut of rough to get the maximum roll and or approach into the green. The shots into the green are similar as you are sometimes playing away from the hole and letting the ground steer the ball to a desired outcome. Not once do you play in the same direction of the previous hole. "

“Greens are large, but provide many different options to set up. Each location having its own protective characteristic. Some new renovation work, also adding a more heat resistant bentgrass will help improve drainage for the course. This should bring the conditioning score up in the future."

“Camargo is one of America's great layouts, potentially the best in Ohio. Raynor courses are enjoying a bit of a renaissance at the moment, and the work ongoing at Camargo is keeping the course in the discussion of Raynor's best. Large template putting green certainly put a premium on putting here, as I had multiple putts over 75 feet long."

“Very cool club with a solid course. Not as good as Raynor's Shoreacres or Fisher's Island. The par 3's are outstanding but there is a lack of design variety on the par 4's or 5's. Great green complexes and bunkering. I do not understand why they filled in the front of the Biarritz hole. The grass is also too high in front of the greens. I would imagine that Raynor would want you to be able to run up shots or putt from off the green. It's too bad membership makes some of these crazy decisions to change template holes and the way the course was supposed to play. I lowered my conditioning number because of this."

“Classic old school course and facilities. Very interesting selection of holes with no two being similar. Classy small clubhouse with a great veranda. One of the most memorable golf experiences in the midwest."

“I am a big fan of Seth Raynor golf courses. I believe that the courses offer a variety and uniqueness of each hole that you are left wanting more. The greens at Camargo are huge. Just because you hit the green doesn't mean that you are going to two putt. All of the classic holes are on this golf course and the Redan hole is simply incredible. I marvel at the design of this golf course. The quaint clubhouse and perfect porch overlooking the golf course make you want to have a sweet tea and watch the day go by. Camargo is special and was a dream to play."
