Overview
Caledonia was Strantz’s first solo design in 1994, and his creativity shines on this golf-only, oak-dotted, sand-dune parcel abutting the marshes and rice paddies of Pawley’s Island. The design is ordered and composed, twisting low through the heavy tree canopy while setting up classic hole strategies into angled greens. There are touches of Pete Dye and just enough quirk to suggest something more intense and experimental brewing under the surface. Subdued and rhythmic, Caledonia is currently ranked 85th on Golf Digest's latest 100 Greatest Public ranking (it’s been as high as 66th). Two musts: The chowder at the turn, and a drink on the porch behind the 18th hole.

“Great layout and really fun to play. Driving range is across the street at True Blue, so need to add a few minutes to your arrival if you want to hit balls before you play. Strongly recommend."

“A short, tight track through old oaks beside a marsh in the lowcountry that provides fun and challenge to golfers of all levels. An example showing that Mike Strantz was capable of more subtle designs than some of his more famous work."

“Holes 7, 9 and 18 are wonderfully demanding but the course overall lacks length, any elevation change and too many medium length par 4s. The green creativity is a testament to Strantz's early brilliance but the course felt underwhelming from an architectural standpoint."

“Fun shorter Mike Strantz design on a former rice plantation. The course is in good shape and in my opinion the best Myrtle Beach has to offer."

“Excellent public course with a variety of holes. Only knock would be that it was a bit short. A must play in the area."

“Course is extremely unique and definitely worth the time to play it. Wide open and yet still fairly challenging. Course is normally in great condition and the club house on top of the hill provides for some really cool views that you cannot get in the Charleston, SC area. Staff and property are unmatched in the area."

“This is Mike Strantz's first course. It doesn't have the same drama or scale as his later courses but it is fun, interesting, and playable."

“Course is great fun. Perhaps a bit more conventional than a few of Strantz's other designs, but still unique and interesting."
