Angel Cabrera plays first competitive round of golf since being released from jail

Free to roam the fairways again, Angel Cabrera made his return to competitive golf on Wednesday.
The two-time major champ shot an opening 71 at Abierto del Litoral (the "Coast Open"), his first official round since serving a 30-month jail sentence in Brazil and Argentina.
Cabrera made three birdies and three bogeys in the first round of the PGA Tour Latinoamerica event. It's his first 72-hole tournament since playing in the 2020 Bridgestone Senior Players Championship.
Cabrera was released in August after serving concurrent sentences for domestic violence and other lesser charges involving two ex-girlfriends. He was granted an early release despite another case still pending, but he must ask for permission to leave his home country of Argentina.
“I just want to go home, be with my family and start a new phase of my life,” he told Golf Digest at the time, through his longtime manager, Manuel Tagle.
Cabrera won the 2007 U.S. Open and the 2009 Masters. The 54-year-old has 47 career worldwide wins.
