HOYLAKE, England — It's an old cliche in sports that you learn more from your losses than your wins.

That's certainly true for Max Homa.

As our writer Shane Ryan captured after Homa's opening round of 68 (which you can read right here), missing the cut at the U.S. Open broke Homa's heart. It lead to a shift in perspective, and a mantra that he writes on his gloves.

So, what does NFG mean?

Homa says it has a "bad word in it," which can only mean one thing: No F--ks Given. After missing the cut at the Travelers the week after the U.S. Open, he wrote it on his glove the following week. He sees it before every shot.

"Sometimes you just need a reminder that it's going to be all right," he says. "Just go play golf. Just stop caring so much and let myself just be myself."

It's a good mantra for the rest of us, too. Just go have fun, play golf and stop stressing. Sometimes the biggest obstacle in this game isn't the course, but getting in your own way.

Is it the British Open or the Open Championship? The name of the final men’s major of the golf season is a subject of continued discussion. The event’s official name, as explained in this op-ed by former R&A chairman Ian Pattinson, is the Open Championship. But since many United States golf fans continue to refer to it as the British Open, and search news around the event accordingly, Golf Digest continues to utilize both names in its coverage.
